between the
missionary/ staff member and those in the churches or missions with
whom he works as well as his support network.
Hebron Missionary Advocacy Fellowship seeks to host or visit the missionary as mentor, coach, or spiritual director. Tom Daniel, who speaks Korean and Russian, has worked in 3 diverse countries and cultures for 25 years in Asia, 10 years mobilizing, training, and supervising South Korean missionaries serving in the Muslim world. In the Third World, there are approximately 13,000 South Korean missionaries serving either alongside or in perceived competition with the Western missionaries. Multi-cultural teams are quickly increasing, especially in the 10/40 Window. At a Front Range Caregivers Forum, an executive said, "Multi-cultural, multi-national teams are imploding." This is because the Eastern mindset cannot understand the Western mindset and vice versa.Western co-workers are paranoid about their contact withKorean missionaries. In Central Asia's largest city, an equal number of Western and South Korean missionaries had differing results. While the Westerners started 2 churches in a five year span, Koreans started 80. Of course, more Koreans were deported than Westerners. On more than one occasion upon seeing a Westerner, a Korean would shout in public. "Missionary, hello! I also am a missionary." For fear of having their cover blown, Westerners avoided being seen with Koreans. Yet still many Westerners are reluctant to work with Koreans or other Asians. The relationship is difficult to develop and maintain. Hebron Missionary Advocacy Fellowship provides orientation, counseling, consultation to multi-cultural teams, either stateside or on the field. Tom has relationships with the administrators of 50 South Korean mission agencies as Mobilization and Training Team Leader, working to increase the numbers of missionaries in the 10/40 Window. |

“HEBRON”
is from the Hebrew word for society or friendship (Hitchcock’s Bible
Names), community or
alliance (Easton’s Bible Dictionary). HEBRON, the rival of Damascus, is one of the most ancient cities in the world. It was well-known when Abraham entered Canaan 3800 years ago. Its modern name is El-khulil, the name Muslims refer to Abraham as "the friend of God." This Levitical city of refuge (Joshua 20:7; 21:11) was David’s royal residence for seven and a half years as king of Judah (2 Samuel 5:5) and here he was anointed king over all Israel (2 Samuel 2:1-4,11; 1 Kings 2:11). ROAD to God is a pilgrimage. We all travel the same road of the pilgrim’s patron saint. “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went” (Hebrews 11:8). In Hollywood classic movies, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope were traveling on “The Road To __” not knowing how to get there. As pilgrims, we may know wherewe are going, but we do not know what adventures lie on the journey or how we will arrive at the destination. “TWO fellows sailing a ship together” is a classic definition of fellowship. We alone cannot make the spiritual journey, since we are dependent on our companions to complete the life-long pilgrimage. “Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee,” God promised (Genesis 26:3). Of course, our companion guide is the Holy Spirit, but we need human companionship for spiritual guidance for encouragement. “If one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken” ( Ecclesiastes 4:12). FELLOWSHIP, an alliance based on friendship, is the first step toward building a community. To bring the pilgrim to the destination of communion with the Creator, spiritual companionship is necessary (as Frodo needed the “Fellowship of the Ring” in J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic, The Lord of the Rings). |
