“provides modeling, close supervision on special projects, individualized help in many areas - discipleship, encouragement, confrontation, and a calling to accountability,” Ted Engstrom, The Fine Art of Mentoring, (Brentwood, TN: Walgemuth and Hyatt, 1989, p. 4). He is a master craftsman training an apprentice in a skill, a wise advisor (New Webster's Dictionary). Mentor helps: turn personal values into practice; sort out priorities; and relate passion to work.

“Mentoring + Reproduction = Legacy.  . . one question that’s guaranteed to inspire a sense of purpose and discipline is - what do you want your legacy to be? What would you like to see accomplished ___ years from now? Although character is a major goal in mentoring, the ultimate goal is reproduction: seeing the people we mentor begin to reproduce.” (David A. Stoddard, theheart ofmentoring.com)

“When you understand that life is a test, you realize that nothing is insignificant in your life. Even the smallest incident has significance for your character development. You will be tested by major changes, delayed promises, impossible problems, unanswered prayers, undeserved criticism, and even senseless tragedies.” Rick Warren (The Purpose-Driven Life,  Zondervan Publishers, p.43)

The New King James Version tells the mentor:
“The things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (II Timothy 2:2)
"Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away." (1Peter 5:2-4)

Mentoring sessions may be in person, over the phone and over e-mail. They will take place one or two times a month either individually or in group sessions. The mentored develops one or more learning contracts addressing the issues which brought them to mentoring. Each session will review progress on the learning contract and goals, will further develop a skill set for ministry, and will review current issues in life, personal and ministry spiritual and character development. The spouse will be drawn into some of the sessions to enrich the marriage for ministry. In all cases there will be times of prayer and worship together.
